FDF National Camp/Belarus / LGBT seminar
What: The FDF National Camp has a long history of inviting participants from organisations connected to FDF through Global Fellowship, Fimcap and missions connected to DanChurchAid. More than 500 international participants are expected to attend the camp in 2016 and dive into the adventure.
When: July 7th to 15th 2016.
Belarus is the last dictatorship in Europe, and we are lucky enough to have some young people from there at the national camp. Find out what it is like to grow up as a child in this country and also to be part of the queer community. As you might imagine gay rights are highly taboo in the former Soviet Union country, with many Belarusian people still believing homosexuality is a psychiatric illness. These young people have established a gay rights organisation in the country and are beginning to slowly change societys’ perceptions by bring a human face to the topic. They will talk about their experience and their journeys so far as well as facilitating a debate about the role of youth organisations to engage a diverse society. Also joining the debate is Global Fellowships’ first openly gay Chief Executive. We highly recommend you consider dropping in for this seminar whatever your views or your organisations perspective. We all have the opportunity to learn something new here and I am sure the debate and discussion will be very informative – where ever you stand. The youth organisations present at the camp have a hugely diverse approach to this topic – PLUS EVERY country and youth organisation has queer people in them. Some are more open and visible than other.
